I just committed myself to helping a neighbor replace an alternator in a Saturn. Could be an easy win
or it could be a long saturday

Did you check where it was located? Alternators are usually a really easy swap, unless you need a lift to get under the car to get to it.
My money is on easy.

Or remove a power steering pump for access.
Ask me how I know...

I hope it’s an SC1.

The v6 is a bitch, hopefully it’s not that one. Good luck. I’m sure there’s a video out there for it.

Fun fact: changing the alternator on my ‘96 Thunderbird was my first ever repair by myself.

Access doesnt look too bad but i may have to buy or make a special tool for the belt tensioner

I borrowed a tensioner tool from auto zone for free when I replaced the tensioner and alternator in my pathfinder.

This is how I won over my future father-in-law. The alternator failed in his daughter’s car. I offered to replace it if they paid for parts, saving him a mechanic’s bill or a six hour (one-way) trip to do it himself. When we finally met in person, he shook my hand and said thanks. According to my future wife, that was the first time he’d ever even acknowledged one of her boyfriends. That’s when she knew I was the one. :)

What kind of special tool do they need for this? Everyone just uses a big hex on every tensioner I’ve released before; why would you do anything else?

That’s what I’m hoping for

The one at my Autozone came with a socket set (metric and English) that would presumably fit most any tensioner pulley. Cost nothing and made releasing the belt tension a breeze.

It’s a 3/8 drive but clearances don’t allow for a ratchet driver

Open end wrench?

The tool looks like this
thin with a 3/8th square drive

You should be good then. Check the ol YouTube for a vijeo and you should be all set.

Oh, bizarre. Well, yeah, probably a case of borrowing the tool... I’m surprised one won’t fit, there’s usually some space next to the belt (because you have to get the belt through that slot when changing it).
